Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, located on the east coast of the country. Maryland is bounded to the north by Pennsylvania, to the west by West Virginia, to the east by the Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, and to the south, across the Potomac River, by West Virginia and Virginia.

Maryland has the highest median household income of any state, due largely to its proximity to Washington, D.C., and a very diverse economy that includes manufacturing, services, higher education, and biotechnology.
