The Commonwealth of Kentucky is the 15th state of the United States. Kentucky is often referred to as the "Southern" state. This is the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln. Kentucky is located in the Upland South. A substantial portion of eastern Kentucky is part of the Appalachian Kentucky region, bordering seven states from the Midwest and Southeast. West Virginia lies to the northeast, Virginia to the east, Tennessee to the south, Missouri to the west, Illinois to the northwest, and Indiana and Ohio to the north.

Kentucky is one of four U.S. states that are considered commonwealths (the others are Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). Originally part of Virginia, in 1792, Kentucky seceded from it and became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th largest and 26th most populous of the 50 United States.

Mammoth Cave National Park, Red River Gorge Geological Area, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, and... are all well-known tourist spots.
