Kansas is a state in the Midwestern United States. The state is named after the Kansas River that flows through it, and the river's name is derived from the Sioux Kansa word for "people of the south wind." Kansas is the geographic center of the mainland United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita, with the most populous county and largest employment center being Johnson County. Kansas borders Nebraska to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. Kansas is named after the Kansas River, named after the Kansa Native Americans who lived along the river.
