Florida is a state in the southeastern part of the United States, bordered on the west by the Gulf of Mexico, on the north by Alabama and Georgia, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the south by the Florida Strait. Florida is the 22nd largest state, the 4th most populous, and the 8th most densely populated of the 50 US states. The capital is Tallahassee, the largest city is Jacksonville, and the Miami metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area.
Much of Florida is located on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Florida Strait. Florida spans two time zones, stretching to the northwest to form a panhandle along the northern part of the Gulf of Mexico. To the north, Florida is bordered by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and to the west, also at the end of the panhandle, is Alabama. Florida is adjacent to the Bahamas and Cuba. Florida is one of the largest states east of the Mississippi River, second only to Alaska and Michigan in terms of inland water area.
